South Staffs Water offers chance for care leavers to claim a discount off their water bill

Young care leavers are being offered a discount off their water bill by South Staffs Water as well as training on how to manage their water account and access to job opportunities.

Signatory: South Staffs Water
Location: West Midlands, South Staffordshire, South Derbyshire, North Warwickshire and North Worcestershire

The water supplier has signed up to become a signatory of the Care Leaver Covenant, alongside other big names in business and retail like Amazon, Reed, ITV and Trowers & Hamlins, and is offering care leavers a 60% discount in year one and a 40% discount in year two.

South Staffs Water is also offering young people further tips and advice on saving water and money and will refer care leavers for further financial support with external partners such as longstanding Covenant signatory, Metro Bank, if needed and will give them advanced notice of employment opportunities within the business.

Launched in October 2018, the Covenant is funded by the Department for Education, the Care Leaver Covenant is a national inclusion programme that tackles the disadvantages that young people aged 16-25 face when leaving care and helps them to live independently.

Working with a range of organisations in the private, public and voluntary sectors, who sign up to the Covenant, tangible opportunities for care leavers are created, including employment, education and training, safety and security, health, financial independence and independent living.

South Staffs Water provides water to approximately 1.3m people and approximately 35,000 commercial customers over 1,500 square km in the West Midlands, South Staffordshire, South Derbyshire, North Warwickshire and North Worcestershire areas.

“Our offer to care leavers and care experienced young people is focussed on not just providing them with short-term financial support for their water account but the vital skills and opportunities they need for their long-term future.

“We are committed to the people and communities that we serve, and we have signed the Covenant to do our bit for some of the young people that live here and to help them overcome any barriers they may face.”

Matthew Gordon, Chief Executive of Spectra, delivery partner of the Care Leaver Covenant, said: “This is a fantastic offer from South Staffs Water to young people in their area and we are delighted they have signed up to the Care Leaver Covenant.

“While it will be a huge help for care leavers to get discounts on their water bills, more important is giving them help to manage their money in the long-term and also provide them with access to employment opportunities with South Staffs Water.”

Each week the Covenant sends opportunities out to its engaged network of around 2,200 young people who access these opportunities through the Covenant’s app and community portal, Connects.

Care experienced young people can apply for the discount either via the Covenant’s website by downloading the simple one page form or working with their personal advisor to complete the application with their local authority.
