Thames Water reflect on their ambitious skills strategy

At Thames Water, we are proud to be an active signatory of the Care Leavers Covenant.

Signatory: Thames Water
Location: South East of England

As we enter the second year of our relationship with the Covenant we reflect on our ambitious skills strategy to help create an inclusive and diverse workforce that is reflective of the communities we serve.

Our successful delivery of this strategy is underpinned by creating or establishing strategic partnerships and ensuring we are achieving sustainable outcomes.

One of our many commitments within the strategy is to support care experienced young people access meaningful work.

In 2021, the Care Leaver Covenant introduced us to the Unite Foundation, who matched young people into Thames Water’s first summer internship programme. This resulted in our cohort of interns being made up of 58% care experienced young people.

Over the eight week summer placement the talented young people have developed great skills and got involved in real life business projects. This year the Covenant introduced us to the Drive Forward Foundation to support the recruitment of our summer internship programme and apprenticeship programme.

“The Drive Forward Foundation’s values and ambitions closely align with what we are working towards at Thames Water so whilst it is a new relationship, it was an instant success.”

To date with the help of the Drive Forward Foundation, we have already started placing young people into this year’s summer internship placements and we are supporting a number of apprenticeship applications from care experienced candidates to start in September.

Also, with the promotion of our care leaver proposition through the Covenant’s channels, we have seen a significant increase in care experienced young people applying for our apprenticeship scheme.

We are only at the start of our journey of opening up meaningful opportunities for care experienced candidates in our communities, we feel confident that with the Covenant’s support we can reach more care leavers and make a real difference to the communities we serve.
