About Joanna Hughes Solicitor Apprenticeships

 

Joanna Hughes Solicitor Apprenticeships works with large law firms and in-house legal teams on the creation and operation of solicitor apprenticeships. With 25 years of experience as a solicitor in a large international law firm, and the Co-CEO of the City Century collaboration of law firms on solicitor apprenticeships, Joanna ‘gets’ law firms and is well connected with them.

Joanna is motivated by a desire to improve socio-economic diversity in the legal profession and is a multi-award winning social mobility advocate. She is well-known for work as a champion of solicitor apprenticeships was recognised in the 2023 Department for Education National Apprenticeship Awards and in 2024 with the inaugural Multicultural Apprenticeship Awards ‘Yusuf Mumtaz Commitment to Apprenticeships’ Award.

Her expertise has led to requests that she judge the Apprenticeship Guide Awards (Head Judge for 2025), the Multicultural Apprenticeship Awards, the Birmingham Law Society Legal Awards (apprentice and trainee categories) and the UK Social Mobility Awards.

 

Our Offer for Care Leavers

Joanna Hughes Solicitor Apprenticeships seeks to leverage opportunities for care leavers within the legal profession. Focusing on guaranteed interviews for care leaver candidates who meet the minimum requirements for the role and leveraging law firms to give a priority to social mobility and ED&I with a particular focus on care leavers.

As Care Leaver Friendly Employer of the Care Leaver Covenant we will:

  • Advertise suitable roles and opportunities through the Care Leaver Covenant.
  • Through core business we will support and encourage firms to ringfence apprenticeship opportunities for care leavers.
  • Where ring-fencing isn’t possible, support firms to guarantee interviews to care leaver candidates who meet the minimum requirements for the role.
  • Provide interview support when needed, including preparation advice and guidance.
