Newham College has undertaken a review of Student Support which resulted in developing a new welfare and safeguarding team, this is a team of 3 people and a dedicated safeguarding and welfare manager. The new posts have cross college responsibility for supporting care experienced learners to ensure they have access to internal and external agencies who can support them throughout their studies, improve attendance, retention and progression.
Each care experienced student has a key contact in college and can meet with them to discuss any barriers or concerns. These staff will ensure students are able to navigate through the various steps of joining college and settling in, including financial support.
We are developing transition events and working closely with Newham Local Authority to develop a transition passport which will ensure that as young people move from one stage of their learning to the next they will receive supportive and timely interventions to help them with their transition.
Newham College have also recruited a Retention and Progression Manager who will work specifically with those care experienced learners that may need additional support. This member of staff will work closely with Student Services and the Curriculum Heads to provide timely interventions to those learners that are most a risk.
We also have a dedicated Sports and Enrichment team who will look to develop specific events and activities for care experienced learners to build their skills and improve their resilience.
In relation to diversity across our workforce and support to apply for our vacancies we are looking to sign the Covenants new employment charter.
