Job Opportunities With a Guaranteed Interview For Care Leavers Who Meet The Job Criteria

We offer a guaranteed interview for all care leavers who meet the minimum criteria for all of our jobs. We also have many volunteering opportunities including a project that works specifically with Care Experienced children and young people.

Further Details: The Reader is the UK’s biggest Shared Reading charity. From our global Shared Reading movement and social enterprises, through to the events and activities on offer at our Calderstones Park home – our work improves wellbeing, reduces loneliness and helps us find new meaning in our lives.

For over twenty years, The Reader has been building a community of Shared Reading groups across the UK and around the world. Here, people connect and share experiences using stories and poems. There is no pressure to talk or read aloud.

These groups happen in all sorts of places including libraries, care homes, cathedrals, cafes, hospitals, prisons, and at our home in Liverpool’s Calderstones Park – the International Centre for Shared Reading and are attended by people from all walks of life.

We believe that literature’s unique power has the potential to connect individuals, help us feel better and to rebuild lost social bonds. We believe that Shared Reading is needed now more than ever.

We operate a guaranteed interview scheme to all Care Leavers who meet the minimum criteria for any job that we advertise. We also have many volunteering opportunities. In particular we run a programme called Reading Heroes which matches trained and vetted volunteers to read 121 with Care Experienced children and young people. It is a fantastic project and we’d love to have some Care Leavers join our volunteer team.

Job Opportunities With a Guaranteed Interview For Care Leavers Who Meet The Job Criteria

Shared Reading – For Free, For Everyone

Join Us at The Reader!

At The Reader, we bring people together to share experiences through stories and poems. Our Shared Reading model creates spaces where individuals can connect, reflect, and build community – all through the transformative power of literature.

Our reading groups meet in diverse locations such as libraries, care homes, hospitals, prisons, cafes, and our home at Liverpool’s Calderstones Park. Open to all, these groups require no prior experience or commitment to reading aloud, offering an inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone.

Who We Are

The Reader is a global movement built on the belief that great literature has the power to connect us, support our well-being, and rebuild social bonds. For over 20 years, we’ve been creating Shared Reading groups across the UK and beyond, bringing people from all walks of life together to share the joy and power of stories.

Founded by Jane Davis MBE, The Reader grew from a magazine in 1997 into an organisation that inspires connection and reflection through literature. We’ve turned a simple idea into a movement, one group at a time.

Our Vision

Our vision is a world where everyone has access to the emotional and social benefits of Shared Reading. We believe that literature can nurture self-understanding, inspire hope, and foster deeper connections with others.

Our Values

  • We Read to Lead: Great literature is at the heart of what we do, encouraging imagination, understanding, and reflection.
  • We Are Kind but Bold: We inspire with kindness and act boldly to achieve our vision.
  • We Make Our Own Pattern: We innovate and pursue what is right, valuing creativity and foresight.
  • We Learn from Experience: We grow by learning from our mistakes and embracing challenges.
  • We Love and Take Responsibility for The Reader: Everyone at The Reader contributes to making it the best it can be.
