Additional Care Leaver Support

Summit Learning Trust recognise the importance of providing both children in care and on the edge of care the necessary support during their time at a Summit academy to ensure they can go on to have successful and happy lives. To enable children and young people in care to achieve high academic progress we are proactive in offering universal support from our pastoral, mentoring and counselling provision in place.

We are relentless in our ambition for all our children and young people to make exceptional levels of academic progress and achieve strong portfolios of qualifications. Across Summit, our focus is on developing responsible, knowledgeable, highly skilled, global citizens who will have a positive impact on our communities now and in future years. We are developing our already established links with higher education establishments, local employers and charitable organisations to ensure that all our young people can benefit from these positive partnerships within our wider communities.

We at Summit Learning Trust will endeavour to uphold the principles of the Care Leavers Covenant, which are:

No child or young person in care or as care leaver should feel disadvantaged in the provision we provide
In some circumstances additional support and guidance may be appropriate for children in care or care leavers
o Cultural experiences linked to the curriculum to ensure learners are inspired to aim high
o Additional support and guidance offered through our Careers guidance to provide the same opportunities as their peers to allow them to move successfully into their next phase of education and adulthood (NSPCC, 2024)
o Through our Summit Base Camp offer we will provide additional support to children in care, care leavers or on the edge of care and their families to ensure they are fully equipped to succeed
o
We will actively promote to our colleagues, learners and their families, suppliers, contractors and all stakeholders that we are a Care Leaver Covenant friendly organisation
We will promote the Care Leaver Covenant’s Connects initiative to our care leavers.
We will support care leavers recognising their qualifications in our recruitment and selection process for vacancies, apprenticeships or training opportunities
Additional support and guidance from pastoral teams in our academies offering mentoring and counselling provision to support the wellbeing
Provide additional tuition where needed including support with digital poverty

To help our looked after children achieve their potential, we take a proactive and preventative approach ensuring they are prioritised in accessing pastoral, mentoring and counselling provision in support of their emotional wellbeing. We also ensure these children receive additional tuition where needed, including access to electronic devices, receive careers education guidance and have full access to our Summit Basecamp offer.
