The Friends of Dorset Care Leavers

If you would like support to access funding for an adventure of your own choosing or funding to help you get out and about this summer, then this opportunity may be for you.

We support the care leavers of Dorset Council who are aged 18-25, to reduce isolation and to promote self-worth. We currently have a ‘choose your own adventure’ fund and a ‘get mobile’ fund. All details and application forms are on our website. We are hopeful of another new fund in the not too distant future too – watch this space.


Throughout the year, we have activities and giveaways too. We can be followed on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter and have a YouTube channel too.

Barnardo’s are passionate about supporting care experienced young people into positive destinations including employment! Barnardo’s would like to support care experienced young people through our Kickstart opportunities.

Barnardo’s is a large children’s charity supporting many children, young people and families across the UK for over 150 years! We have a large range of services as well as shops that raise vital funds to support our work.

 Who is Kickstart for?

16 to 25 year olds on Universal Credit. Barnardo’s welcomes applications from care leavers (care experienced young people). You will be paid minimum wage for your age and work 25 hours per week. We will provide employability support throughout and support you to learn new skills.

What are the Job Roles and where?

  1. Retail – STORE ASSOCIATES x106

Location; We have over 100 roles live on the DWP system now these are all over the England/Scotland and Wales, so please check with your work coach if we a role in your town/city.

Role; As a Store Associate you will support the team with all aspects of running a busy store, it’s the best of both worlds as you will have responsibilities but also the chance to develop and learn with an experienced store manager by your side. You’ll need to be organised with good communication skills and ready to learn as a team how to maximise sales and profit and meet your stores targets.

  1. Assistant Project Worker – Care Journeys x2

Location; 1 x Brent   1 x Plymouth live now.

Role; You’ll be part of testing new ways of working for both Barnardo’s and the local authority. As part of the wider team, you will be able to shape how services are delivered for care experienced children and young people. You will help work with care experienced young people in projects designed to create systems change and help deliver a range of engagement activities such as group work.

Positivity, enthusiasm and excellent listening skills are key to this role, to enable children and young people to reach their aims and goals.

We particularly welcome applications from young people who have care experience to allow them to use their lived knowledge to shape Care Journeys strategy to improve outcomes for care experienced young people.
