HelpMe UK Care Leavers App – Information, Support and Tools for Independent Living

Summary: HelpMe UK helps care leavers understand their rights, manage everyday life and access support through participating local authorities.

Further Details:

Organisation: HelpMe UK

Location: Available through participating local authorities across the UK

HelpMe UK is a multilingual support app that helps people understand letters, forms and everyday life in the UK in a way that makes sense to them.

The HelpMe UK Care Leavers version has been designed specifically for young people leaving care, bringing together the information, tools and support they need as they move towards independence.

Created by someone with lived experience of the care system and navigating life in the UK without confidently speaking English, HelpMe UK was built around a simple idea: important information should be understandable, accessible and available when young people need it.

How HelpMe UK Supports Care Leavers

Leaving care involves managing many new responsibilities at once. HelpMe UK brings key information and tools together in one place, helping young people understand their rights, stay connected with their support network and build confidence for independent living.

The app includes:

Know Your Rights

Information about care leaver rights and entitlements at key stages of your journey, including ages 16, 17, 18, 21 and 25.

You can also access your local authority’s care leaver offer and important local contacts.

Your Pathway to Independence

The Progress Path helps you understand and track your journey towards independence.

You can:

  • View your pathway plan
  • Track your goals and progress
  • See when your next review is due
  • Understand the steps you are taking towards your future

Stay Connected With Your Personal Adviser

HelpMe UK provides a secure way to stay connected with your Personal Adviser.

You can:

  • Message your Personal Adviser securely
  • Access important support information
  • Keep key details about your pathway plan together in one place

Making Letters and Forms Easier to Understand

One of the things that makes HelpMe UK different is that it translates meaning, not just words.

You can photograph letters or forms from organisations such as your council, DWP, GP, Home Office or landlord and receive a clearer explanation in your own language.

This helps you understand important information and make decisions with greater confidence.

A live communication tool can also support conversations with professionals such as Personal Advisers, GPs and housing officers where language may otherwise create a barrier.

Everyday Independence Support

HelpMe UK includes practical guides to support you with everyday life, including:

  • Registering with a GP
  • Opening a bank account
  • Setting up a mobile phone
  • Understanding tenancy rights
  • Managing benefits
  • Learning about driving and the theory test

You can also access a library of over 60,000 books and learning stories, including audio content to support learning and development.

Health and Wellbeing Support

HelpMe UK includes tools to help you look after your wellbeing, including:

  • A Health Passport
  • A private wellbeing journal
  • Personal wellbeing check-ins
  • A secure space to reflect on how you are feeling

Your wellbeing information is private and only visible to you.

The app also includes a one-tap route to emergency and crisis support if urgent help is needed.

Staying Informed About Opportunities

The What’s New section and notifications help you stay up to date with:

  • Important changes
  • Events

  • News relevant to care leavers

This helps you access information when it matters.
